Ho pensato di fare cosa gradita creando questo thread su Tom & Jerry, una serie di cortometraggi che io considero parenti stretti dei Looney Tunes, soprattutto nel periodo in cui i corti erano prodotti da Chuck Jones e soci e, in seguito, quando la serie è stata acquistata dalla Warner che ha prodotto una serie TV e svariati film direct-to-video. Apro il thread facendo una lista dei principali DVD dove è possibile trovare i corti, dato che ne vengono distribuiti continuamente. I DVD sono ovviamente tutti prodotti e distribuiti dalla Warner Bros. Sulla falsariga della guida di Frog, faccio una panoramica di orientamento:
La serie fondamentale è la Tom & Jerry Classic Collection, composta da 12 volumi (a suo tempo allegati anche a TV Sorrisi e Canzoni, dove però i numeri vennero sostituiti da titoli). In essi sono presenti tutti i corti della serie tranne Un gatto da un milione di dollari (The Million Dollar Cat, 1944), I baby sitter (Busy Buddies, 1956) e L'arte del karate (The Karate Guard, 2005). Purtroppo in questa serie sono stati usati esclusivamente master televisivi, quindi i corti in Cinemascope sono croppati in 4:3, e non c'è alcun contenuto speciale.
Episodi non presenti in questa serie si possono trovare in questi DVD:
- Tom & Jerry - Le grandi sfide, serie composta da 5 volumi: essi contengono gran parte dei corti degli anni '40/'50, inclusi i due mancanti dalla serie precedente. Inoltre qui i corti in Cinemascope sono realmente in quel formato.
- Tom & Jerry - Deluxe Anniversary Collection, cofanetto da 2 DVD che raccoglie i migliori episodi degli anni '40/'50, tre corti del periodo Chuck Jones (i primi due che ha diretto e uno successivo) e anche L'arte del karate, insieme ad altri contenuti. Questa è una delle poche uscite italiane dedicate ai collezionisti/appassionati.
Tutti gli altri DVD contengono corti già editi in queste serie. Inoltre a partire dal 2006 in molte raccolte vengono inclusi, a mo' di cortometraggi, anche dei segmenti di episodi della serie TV Tom & Jerry Tales.
Da segnalare anche il cofanetto Collezione Oscar d'animazione, che raccoglie tutti i corti che hanno vinto o sono stati candidati all'Oscar (insieme a corti di altre serie Warner, MGM o Paramount che hanno avuto tale onore). Qui sono però presentati in versione restaurata.
